Once a property has attained homestead status, it remains homestead until it is abandoned. A homestead is abandoned when it no longer serves as the owner's bona fide home and place of permanent residence. Courts have held that a temporary abasence of an owner for reasons of health, business or recreation and the temporary rental of the home during this absence does not necessarily demonstrate an intent to abandon the homestead.
